“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)
Every time my husband or I pray with our 3 year old son, we/he closes the prayer with “Please help me to do the right thing – even when it is hard.” Sometimes, if he has struggled with something during the day, he will add that specific event into his prayer at this point.
Doing the right thing is often not easy. It is often something we have to work at; we have to fight for it. Why is this? The Bible tells us in Ephesians chapter 6 that we are in a spiritual war, where the powers of darkness and wickedness are throwing fiery arrow at us. Satan and his host want to make it as hard as possible for us to do the ‘right thing’.
Some examples of how to do the right thing are mentioned here in Ephesians chapter 6. It is right for children to obey their parents (v.1); it is right for parents to avoid exasperating their children (v.4); is it right for slaves to obey their masters (v.5 – this can be applied to staff obeying managers too); it is right for masters to treat slaves with goodness (v.9 – or managers to so treat their staff). All of these situations occur in our daily life, and I don’t know about you, but I sure find some of them hard to do at times! So we have to fight – fight for God, and for righteousness.
We are soldiers. We fight the war of life. Our battle is not against flesh or blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil. And with truth, righteousness, the Gospel of peace, faith, the Word of God and prayer, we can win our battles.
So fight to do the right thing today – even when it is hard. Fight on God’s side.
